CO2 Incubator Sterilization method with 90ºC Moist Heat Decontamination 17 Jun 2010: In this application note, Esco validate the Swiftcon 90ºC moist heat decontamination cycle of the Celculture CO2 Incubator by performing decontamination tests on 5 bacterial suspension preparations, including Aspergillus niger and Bacillus subtilis. After decontamination, the microbial suspension discs were placed on tubes containing PBS which were assayed by culturing methods to quantitate Total Viable Count at each location. Esco Micro Pte Ltd

Turbidometric Growth Curve Measurements and Liquid Evaporation Studies with a Microplate Photometer 24 May 2010: The ability to monitor bacterial samples is important for food testing safety and analysis. This paper describes how a filter-based microplate photometer, Thermo Scientific Multiskan FC, can be used reliably and easily to measure turbidity of bacterial samples in antibiotic susceptibility studies. The growth curve measurements were performed on a 96-well microplate. Thermo Fisher Scientific

Natural Products Targeting Oncology Pathways 04 May 2010: In this application note, BioFocus present three examples for natural compounds targeting specific tumor pathways: geldanamycin, borrelidin and fredericamycin. Gram quantities of the compounds are generated using microbial producers and semi-synthesis subsequently generates focused libraries of natural compound analogs. In vivo and in vitro protocols are then used to test potential anticancer properties of the compounds. BioFocus

Are Natural Products Delivering? Experiences and Recommendations from 27 Screening Campaigns 04 May 2010: In this application note from BioFocus, microbial strain subfractions are generated and used in high-throughput screens (HTS) for analysis with regard to diversity, selectivity and strain origin. Natural compounds were identified during the follow up of subfraction screening programs and their chemical properties have been analyzed. Searches in natural product databases revealed that 135 of the 645 identified natural compounds are novel compounds. BioFocus

Nephelometric Monitoring Growth of Candida albicans Using BMG LABTECH’s NEPHELOstar 08 Apr 2010: Laser nephelometry has been shown to be a reliable technique for the measurement of drug solubility in 96-well plate format. In this application note the effects of complexation on drug antimycotic activity is described. Laser nephelometry can distinguish between the concentration at which the drug just goes into or just comes out of solution. This is presented in phase solubility studies. BMG LABTECH

Standards Compliant Hot Air Sterilization at 180 °C – A Reliable Method for Contamination Control 01 Mar 2010: Microbial contamination from bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms frequently presents a major risk in cell culture experiments. This application note from Binder discusses compliant hot air for contamination control in CO2 incubators and the replication of natural in vivo conditions for optimal cell growth. BINDER

Live Cell Imaging of Drug Effects on Golgi Morpholgy Using the CELLview™ Cell Culture Dish 01 Mar 2010: This application note by Greiner Bio-One shows that performing live-cell imaging experiments in parallel in CELLview™ dishes with four compartments allows a direct comparison of the speed and timing of drug effects on the Golgi apparatus. GalNAc-GFP cells can be easily imaged at multiple positions without cell death or focus problems. Greiner Bio-One GmbH

Application of SPR to Bacteriology: Endotoxin/Protein Interaction Studies 22 Jan 2010: This application note describes a novel application of SPR to the detection of endotoxin via its interaction with the CD-14 protein. This shows that SPR is a suitable technique for monitoring binding of endotoxins to proteins, antibiotics, and other species. Biosensing Instrument

Interior Sterilization Using CO2 Incubator with Built-In Hydrogen Peroxide 09 Dec 2009: This white paper by SANYO Biomedical and Environmental Solutions introduces a cell culture CO2 incubator process with a built-in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) vapour system which enables decontamination without the use of heat sterilization. This integrated system provides a multi-layered defense against contamination in an in vitro environment, permitting frequent sterilization with less downtime, essential for highly regulated cell culture protocol SANYO Biomedical and Environmental Solutions
